My Old Blogs
I started blogging around 1997, although it wasn't called blogging back then. In fact it had no name and it wasn't something that normal people did. Over the years I've made sporadic attempts to keep a blog going, sometimes with moderate success, other times neglecting it altogether. Unfortunately I've lost a lot of my posts and comments but here's a sample from the archives:
- My 5 Cents (1997 - 1999)
Some of my first online musings, in the form of random articles. These were written long before public comments became a popular feature on web pages, so there are no comments included except a few that I received by email.
- Guestbook (1998 - 1999)
Guestbooks were cool for a while—I saved some of the comments left by visitors.
- Forum/Guestbook/Blog (1999 - 2008)
In 1999 I installed a forum on the site. It was basically a glorified guestbook but allowed more conversation between me and visitors.
This was about the time that the term blog became a thing, so I eventually created a new forum and called it a blog. During this period I actually got quite a lot of page views and comments, and some of my stuff caused a bit of a stir. Unfortunately it was also when I learnt how stupid most blog comments are. 80% of the commenters obviously weren't properly reading the articles or other people's comments—it's amazing how many people pass judgement based on the headline alone. I became disillusioned and I let the blog slide.
In 2008 I made a comeback of sorts. I dumped the forum software I was using and started a new set of blogs at blogger.com. This was when I split my blogs into different topics—some of them are still going (see above), some of them have since been retired.
